SLATON, TX (KCBD) - Area athletes from across the South Plains will be well represented at the UIL State Track & Field Championships. Slaton High School alone is sending 13 athletes, but one stands out because of how many events she has qualified for.
Slaton Junior TK Robinson has a goal. “I tell my teammates every day... what is our main goal? I say, what place do you want to get? They say first, and I am like ‘me too.’ So, we got to come out here every day and work our hardest if we want to get first.”
Many of her teammates will be making yet another trip to the state’s biggest meet.
“See Red, we came up with about three years ago,” Girls Track Coach Rustin Klafka said. “Because, going to track meets, you always look for uniform color. We wanted people to know when we show up that we had our red uniforms on, that Slaton was there. So, we wanted to establish an element of that Slaton is here and that they are going to be here to compete.”
It is that ‘See Red’ mindset of going out there and competing that has this team going back to the state meet.
TK Robinson has trained to get back for her third time. But she didn’t want to just go, she wanted to go in five different events.
"She set a goal of wanting to qualify in five different events, and she has worked her tail off all year to put in the time and dial in on the details," Klafka said. "Because that is really what it takes to get there in five different events. It takes a special kid to dial into those details to get to that next level."
A special and humble kid with a passion for running - looks to go the distance and make the podium at the state meet.
“I at least want to get on the medal stand, because state is hard,” Robinson said. “It is not so easy but I try every day in practice and in meets. Just listen to my coaches, anything they say and just go out there and do what I can do.”
When the meet begins on Saturday, TK will compete in the following events:
Girls 4x100 Meter Relay
Girls 4x200 Meter Relay
Girls 200 Meter Dash
Girls Long Jump
Girls Triple Jump
