WOLFFORTH, Texas (KCBD) - This week we went out with WesTex Federal Credit Union to help a longtime church-goer Pay It Forward to a special ministry at her church.
Jenny McDaniel has been going to Wolfforth United Methodist Church since 1995, a church she says feels like one big family and takes care of those outside the church like they’re part of the family too.
“Well you even mentioned it in your announcements Sunday about how important your purple bag ministry is because there are kids right here in our community who don’t have food to eat and they at least have food to take home every Friday,” McDaniel said.
It’s a program Pastor Rich Jones says they’ve been doing for nearly 10 years and a simple way to take care of some of the students just across the street.
“So our way is just to have these purple bags and once a month we pass them out, ask everybody in the church to buy an extra bag of groceries, and we take them across the street to Bennett Elementary School," Jones said. "Trusting the Lord and trusting all of this to feed the hungry kids so that they can do well and have a great life.”
He said by far its the most popular program at their church. But it’s just a small piece of a much bigger puzzle.
“Well there’s two emotions. Just extreme pride. Extreme pride of my congregation and of Wolfforth, Frenship, Southwest Lubbock, how we partner together in this. So I’ve got a lot of pride around it," Jones said. "But it’s a continual broken heart also, knowing that the need’s not going away, it’s only getting worse. So we can’t do it alone. I think every church outta be doing this or something like this to feed kids in the community absolutely.”
