LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Just hours before their fourth non-conference game of the year, the Red Raiders received the news that Joel Ntambwe's transfer waiver appeal was denied by the NCAA.
Ntambwe, a sophomore transfer from UNLV, had filed a waiver to be immediately eligible to play for the Red Raiders this season.
Joel Ntambwe would transfer to Texas Tech because of a coaching change at UNLV, and according to Jay Bilas of ESPN - all of his former teammates at UNLV had their waivers granted by the NCAA.
So, because of that, people inside of the Texas Tech basketball program were confident that he would be cleared to play for the scarlet and black this year.
But, of course, his appeal was denied by the NCAA.
“Hard times pass, tough people last...” - Chris Beard said last night at the post game press confernece.
There has been speculation all over Twitter last night and today, the reason why Joel Ntambwe wasn't cleared was because of UNLV.
But, according to TJ Otzelberger the head basketball coach of the Runnin' Rebels - UNLV cooperated with the NCAA.
Bottom line is... With the transfer waiver appeal being denied, Joel Ntambwe will have to sit out the season, waiting until next year to play.
