Frenship spellebrity goes to National Spelling Bee for third time
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A Frenship middle schooler is heading to the national spelling bee for the third time.
Thirteen-year-old Matthew Noel is a five-time district champ, three-time regional champ and is heading to the national stage for the last time.
Matthew spends hours every day spelling words at high speed with his dad, using computer programs, for words that most people can’t pronounce.
“Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis,” Noel spelled.
It’s a good thing he knew that word because he said you never know what will leave you stumped at the microphone.
“You can memorize the entire dictionary, except one word and get that one word and be out on it,” Noel said.
Noel qualified for nationals last year, but it was canceled due to the pandemic.
“i got to use last year’s preparations for this year,” Noel said.
The Lubbock region lost its sponsorship this year, until community partners like United Supermarkets stepped up. Noel says he’s thankful for their support because our area has lots of gifted students.
“Some of the competitions are really challenging. For example, the Frenship ISD went 32 rounds. There are a lot of tough competitors for next year and I can’t wait to see how they represent Frenship next year,” Noel said.
Noel will represent the Lubbock region, virtually, in June, and hopes to win for Frenship.
“I’m going to do my best when i go there. Its my last time so I hope to make everyone proud.”
