LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - For the fourth time, the VFW 2466 post has received all-state recognition and is set to receive All American recognition at the VFW National Convention later this summer. To celebrate the Lubbock VFW’S 90th birthday, the city will honor the Ancile “Al” White VFW post-2466 for their impact on the community.

Commander of VFW Lubbock, Benny Guerrero, says community service sets the Lubbock post apart from the rest. The entire volunteer staff serves mostly people outside of the post.

“No one in the state of Texas can even touch us with community service. And in the country, nationally, I would put our posts against anyone nationally,” Guerrero said.

The four pillars it lives by are youth activities, teacher recognition, community service, and honoring the sacrifice of all veterans. VFW members are often sent to history classes, teaching students about their sacrifices made and why they chose to fight for our country.

“We have one you want to talk to somebody about Asia, World War Two, we got one so we go sit down, they ask these veterans questions and, and the veteran has already coped with his PTS that he can say it with laughter and love and joy and understanding,” Guerrero said.

The VFW also partners with the Purple Heart Association to show support for first responders.

“If any first responder gets injured, we immediately pay visits and we do a ceremony service in their honor. And they get a Purple Heart plaque. Again, this is from the Purple Heart mentor, but we’re there to support. That’s one of the things that we’ll never ever stop doing, is supporting our first responders,” Guerrero said.

As for education, three Lubbock teachers have won Texas VFW Teacher of The Year because of how they promote patriotism, through teaching about veterans, and first responders and honoring the sacrifice. And post-2466 will take any opportunity to celebrate patriotism on the fourth of July, flag day, and other ceremonies to recognize service.
