Wednesday’s wind, dust, and fire-danger
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - More wind will sweep up more dust across the KCBD viewing area today. It won’t be quite as windy or as dusty as yesterday. The wildfire danger, however, remains very high.
After a bit of a lull in wind speeds this morning, they will increase to about 20 to 30 mph from late morning through the afternoon. Gusts near 40 mph are possible. Some blowing dust is likely.
Although winds won’t be as strong and it will be cooler, with the very low humidity, dry grasses, and ongoing drought, the wildfire danger remains very high. Today’s Fire Weather Outlook indicates a critical wildfire danger across West Texas and eastern New Mexico.
A FIRE WEATHER WARNING (aka Red Flag Warning) is in effect for all the South Plains until 9 PM CDT.
Today otherwise will be mostly sunny and much cooler. Highs today will be about 20 degrees cooler than yesterday.
Winds will become light by sunset, which is at 8:17 PM CDT for Lubbock, and will continue light through the night.
Tonight will be clear and cold. I anticipate a low in the mid-30s for Lubbock. A brief and light freeze is likely to the west and north of Lubbock.
Less wind, but still some wind, in the days ahead.
Tomorrow, Thursday, will be mostly sunny with a breezy and warm afternoon. A southerly wind will pick up to about 10 to 20 mph. There will be some gusts in a 20 to 30 mph range. Highs will range from the mid-70s in the northwestern KCBD viewing area to near 80 degrees in the southeast.
Good Friday weather will be... mostly good. We will see an increase in high clouds, but the day will be dry. It will be breezy, with speeds about 10 to 20 mph with gusts near 30 mph possible. Temperatures will peak in the 80s for most, with highs near 90 to the low 90s east of the Caprock.
Breezy again Saturday under a mostly cloudy sky. It will be dry, and the wildfire danger will remain high. Temperatures will peak in the 70s for most.
Easter Sunday, too, will be breezy. It will be partly cloudy with a very warm afternoon. Temperatures will peak in the 80s.
Our next chance of rain, based on today’s data, is around Tuesday of next week. Signals for rain, however, are not very encouraging.
