LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A hot afternoon kicks off the holiday weekend for the South Plains and Lubbock area. That will be followed by a much cooler Saturday. Here’s the outlook for the holiday weekend and beyond.

Wildfire Danger

Friday afternoon will be partly cloudy, dry, breezy, and hot. Of course, with the heat, wind, and drought, our fire weather concerns will continue. These NO BURN conditions will continue until the area receives significant rainfall.

This Good Friday will be mostly sunny, dry, breezy, and very warm to hot.

Near-Record Heat

Highs today will be about 15 degrees above average for mid-April and will approach the record for the date. Lubbock’s April 15 average high is 76°. The record high is 92°, recorded on this date in 1925 (and tied on this date in 2006).

A FIRE WEATHER WARNING (aka Red Flag Warning) is in effect until 8 PM CDT.

Dry and breezy through Easter in Lubbock and across the South Plains.

Mostly fair, breezy, and cool tonight. Lows will range from near 40 degrees in the northwestern KCBD viewing area to near 50 degrees in the southeast.

Tomorrow, Saturday, will be much cooler and mostly cloudy. Also breezy and dry. So despite the cooler weather, the elevated wildfire danger remains. Temperatures tomorrow will peak a little below average, ranging from the low and mid-60s in the northeastern viewing area to the upper 70s - even near 80 - in the southwest.

Easter Forecast

Early Easter morning will be a bit chilly with lows in the 40s. The day is going to be sunny, breezy, and very warm. I expect highs in the 80s.

Next Rain Chance

Our next chance of rain still centers on Tuesday. There is at least a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms from late Monday through early Wednesday. Amounts, in general, will be light. There is the possibility, however, for small pockets of significant rainfall with the potential for thunderstorms.
