LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - It wasn’t a white Christmas, but families in Levelland are still enjoying a winter wonderland the city created for them.

For the past three years, the City of Levelland has been doing Mother Nature’s work, creating Sled Hill at Lobo Lake for families to slide into the new year.

Dustin Reichelt with the Parks and Cemetery Department says the city hosts the event three times a year.

“It’s just overall a really cool thing, to see all these people come out and enjoy the Sled Hill,” Reichelt said.

Making the snow can be a tricky process. Temperatures must stay low enough for the powder to stick. After that, it’s just a combination of air and water.

“It’s high-compressed air and also high-pressure water,” Reichelt said.

Reichelt says one of the best things about this event is that it gives kids the opportunity to do something they might not have ever done before.

All community members are welcome. You don’t need to bring anything, just grab a sled and go for a ride.

“Quite a few kids that probably would never be able to make it out to anywhere that has snow,” Reichelt said. “So, this gives them an opportunity at home to play in the snow and sled. It’s not just for kids; we had a grandparent go down yesterday. We have adults use it as well. Sleds are provided, they just show up we have them here. They don’t even need one.”

For those kids who don’t have the need for speed, the city created an area where they can do all the other things needed for a frosty good time.

“We made a snow play area as well. We basically just blew snow all over this patch of grass and let the kids run out there and throw snowballs, build a snowman, do a snow angel. All those snow activities.”

Sled Hill will be open at Lobo Lake from 10 a.m. To 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for cool kids looking to ride in style.
