LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - The Ahavah Foundation, a Lubbock-based nonprofit dedicated to providing long term care and support for adults with mental disabilities, is seeking volunteers.

Founded in 2021 by Toni Jennings, the foundation operates four group homes in Lubbock, offering residents the opportunity to achieve independence, build a sense of community, and lead fulfilling lives.

Each home serves six residents, ranging in age from 20 to 60, with activities including cooking, cleaning, exercising, volunteering, and working at local jobs.

“We help individuals become more seen, visible in the community. We want them to be like everybody else,” Jennings said,

With a waiting list currently at six months, the foundation is calling on volunteers who can spend time with residents, take them on outings, and offer companionship.

Volunteers must be 17 years or older and pass a background check.

Melissa Urbina, director of care staff, emphasized the importance of community engagement.

“The disability does not define anyone, so just as you and I would go out into the normal communities and do activities, it should be the same for them without judgment,” she said.

To support Ahavah’s mission, the foundation is actively seeking volunteers and donations. Those interested in helping can visit their website for more information.
