2 in custody, charged with evidence tampering in fatal motorcycle crash

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - One person has died and another was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash on Sunday night, Feb. 1.

Lubbock Police say the call came in from 29th Drive and the Marsha Sharp Freeway at 7:38 p.m.

When officers arrived, they found 19-year-old Sean Canales, and 17-year-old Maizie Casares.

Both were transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries where Canales later died.

Through the initial course of the investigation, it appears, the motorcycle, driven by Canales, was going west on MSF when it collided with a guardrail on the north side of the road.

No other vehicles were involved and no other injuries were reported.

Two people have been taken into custody charged with tampering with evidence in connection with this case.

LPD released a statement on Thursday, Feb. 12, saying 19-year-old Payton Martin and 24-year-old Thomas Threet were both arrested and taken to the Lubbock County Detention Center “without incident.”
