Clovis man arrested after SWAT standoff following stabbing

CLOVIS, New Mexico (KCBD) - A Clovis man was arrested during a SWAT standoff Thursday afternoon in connection with a stabbing that injured another man.
57-year-old Victor Apodaca is charged with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer.
Around 2:15 p.m., Clovis police responded to 1200 N. Lea for reports of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers found 40-year-old Kyle Allen with non-life-threatening injuries from a stab wound.
Allen told officers he was stabbed by Apodaca, who was later found at 1216 N. Lea Street.
Police say when officers made contact with Apodaca, he was still armed with a knife. Apodaca then closed the door to the home and refused to come out prompting the Clovis Police Department SWAT Team to respond.
Negotiators from the SWAT Team attempted to speak with Apodaca throughout the incident.
Police say Apodaca continuously opened the door, yelled obscenities and reportedly began brandishing knives at officers on scene. The SWAT Team deployed chemical munitions into the home attempting to force Apodaca out of the home.
Apodaca was taken into custody when he exited the residence and surrendered.
Apodaca was treated for his exposure to the chemical munitions and transported to the Curry County Adult Detention Center.
Detectives with the Special Operations Unit assisted with the investigation and executed a search warrant on the residence and recovered the knives used by Apodaca.
