LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - A 1-month-old baby in Nebraska is alive today because his mother knew exactly what to do when he suddenly stopped breathing at home.

His mother, Moriah Gaddis, also happens to be a cardiac nurse. When her newborn became unresponsive, her training immediately took over.

“I started doing CPR on him. He wasn’t responding, and I was counting out loud,” Gaddis said. “I got him back after about a minute and a half. Color fully returned.”

Now, Gaddis is urging every new mother and caregiver to learn infant CPR before leaving the hospital with their newborn.

“I am afraid that, if I wasn’t a nurse and if I didn’t ask for that CPR, he wouldn’t be here,” Gaddis said. “And I’m so happy that he’s here.”

Infant CPR training available in Lubbock

While the close call happened hundreds of miles away in Nebraska, first responders and health professionals say the risk is universal—and having trained parents and caregivers right here on the South Plains can save lives.

For Lubbock-area parents, grandparents, and babysitters wanting to learn infant CPR, the American Red Cross offers classes locally.

Courses teach hands-on infant and child CPR, choking relief, and AED response. Local class schedules and registration details are available online through the American Red Cross Lubbock CPR Training page.
