Trump hosts Chinese President for state visit at White House
Leaders discuss trade, Iran war and artificial intelligence
WASHINGTON (Gray DC) - President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to the White House Thursday for an official state visit. The visit comes four months after Trump was hosted by Xi in Beijing for a state visit.
Trump and Xi, the leaders of the world’s two largest economies, spent much of Thursday afternoon in the Oval Office discussing areas of shared interest.
In the White House’s Grand Foyer, Trump said he and Xi had made what he called “tremendous strides” on national security, trade and technology.
Xi, speaking through a translator, told Trump that the U.S. and China “stand to gain from cooperation and will both lose in confrontation.”
The agenda included trade and tariffs, the ongoing war in Iran and the future of artificial intelligence.
The U.S. and China agreed to extend a trade truce until January. Both countries will also reduce tariffs on $30 billion worth of goods.
No agreement was reached on implementing safeguards for artificial intelligence.
