SAN ANGELO, TX (AP) - Goodfellow Air Force Base confirmed Wednesday that a 23-year-old Texas Tech student was one of the men killed when a small airplane crashed near San Angelo Sunday.

John T. Rice was also assigned to the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, officials said.

The second man who died, 2nd. Lt. Peter A. Sohm, had been confirmed on Monday by his family in New Hampshire.

Both men were graduates of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Lynn Lunsford said witnesses told investigators the two-seat Christen Eagle took off from Mathis Field/San Angelo Municipal Airport on Sunday. Witnesses said the two people on board indicated they wanted to go on an apparent sightseeing trip over the wildfire, the Associated Press reported.

The plane crashed near Goodfellow Air Base where Sohm was stationed.
