This weekend's Buddy Holly Symposium drew in people from across the globe in honor of the artist who profoundly influenced legendary musicians. But what many don't know is that Buddy himself was inspired by his first love and we're not talking about his music. NewsChannel 11 has the story of Buddy Holly's Echo.

"I began dating him when we went to high school, and I dated him for five and a half years," a magical time for Echo McGuire, who says her years while dating Buddy Holly were unforgettable. "He was a gentleman. He also had a serious nature about him, and as far as his career, he was very dedicated," explains Echo.

But it wasn't Buddy's dedication to his music career that made them part, it was Echo who decided they should split after dating him for two years while she was in college.

"Buddy's and my direction were going different, and it wasn't that I loved him any less," she says. It was her love for another man, now her husband of 32 years, that led her astray. "When I met her, they said she was Buddy Holly's girlfriend and I didn't believe it," explains Ron, her husband.

The only thing she regrets is burning the many love letters Buddy wrote her while she was away for college. "I thought that was the thing to do, honorable, I didn't know he was going to be famous," she chuckles.

And Buddy Holly isn't her only claim to fame, another famous legend also tried to steal her heart. "Buddy took me back stage to meet him and Elvis asked me to kiss him and I turned him down," she says.

These days, Echo revels in memories with her husband about the legend that touched her heart with his love and his music.

Echo McGuire and her husband, Ron, live in Carlsbad, New Mexico where they dedicate their time to a non-profit ministry that circulates inspirational newspaper columns across the world.
