Federal workers who typically clean and protect the nation's monuments have been furloughed due to the government shutdown
In response, hundreds of Tea Party members turned out Saturday on the National Mall to clean up the capitol.
Members met on the capitol's west lawn, where they coordinated before heading out across the mall with rakes and garbage bags to pick up trash around the monuments.
The volunteers were encouraged not to bring political signs, but to come prepared to go to work and make it a day of service.
