Salmonella concerns...why policies on chicken just aren't strong enough
There's a new warning from the government about chicken, it says policies on salmonella in raw chicken are not strong enough to protect public health.
This comes after studying two recent salmonella outbreaks linked to chicken farms in California. So far, more than 500 people in 23 states have been sickened, and experts say that number could be closer to 15,000 when you include those who were sick but didn't go to the doctor.
A recent consumer reports study that analyzed 316 raw chicken breasts found 10% were contaminated with salmonella.
Remember, it's important to cook chicken thoroughly, always use separate utensils for poultry, and make sure they are carefully washed.
