POST, TX (KCBD) - Garza County Sheriff Terry Morgan says 34-year-old Ashlee Dean of Post, TX has confessed to shooting and killing her daughter Alex on Thursday while under the influence of drugs.

Morgan says the girl was shot in the head.

Dean is being charged with "Capital murder of a person under six years of age."

The family says Alex was just short of her second birthday.

Garza County authorities were called to the home on Thursday afternoon. The girl's father lives and works in Post and she died inside his home.

Child Protective Services released a statement on Friday afternoon, confirming that the family did have a history with CPS.

They say they opened an investigation for neglect in February 2013 and "found reason to believe the allegations were true."

CPS says, "At that time, there were concerns about substance abuse and poor living conditions in the home. We successfully worked services with the mother during the next six months and closed the case in November 2013."

Ashlee Dean was arraigned on capital murder charges. Her bond is set at 1 million dollars.

A fund has been established to help with Alex's funeral expenses at Wells Fargo bank in Post.

The First Baptist Church of Post will be holding a vigil to "pray for and support the family of" Alexandria Courtney Dean at 7 p.m. on Saturday. They are located at 402 W. Main.
