LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Xcel Energy customers on the South Plans could soon be paying more for electricity.

On Tuesday, the company asked state regulators to approve an increase to cover the increasing cost of natural gas.

The gas is used to generate about 40 percent of the region's electricity.

If approved, customers will see an increase in their bills beginning June 1.

Xcel estimates that the average customer will pay about a $1.50 more per month.
