TTU releases surveillance video of Bethel/Battle incident
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - UPDATE: Texas Tech reinstates Nigel Bethel, allows return to football program
Texas Tech has released surveillance video of the incident between Amber Battle and Nigel Bethel II.
The incident happened during a pick-up basketball game at the Student Recreation Center on June 28. Bethel is accused of punching Amber Battle during the conflict, breaking a bone in her face.
Bethel was immediately removed from the TTU football program. Battle will be suspended for the month of November.
Battle admitted that she "initiated the first contact" and apologized to "Nigel, the Texas Tech community, my teammates, coaches and fans" in a statement released on July 4.
The attorney for Nigel Bethel II says his client was "cleared" by a Lubbock Grand Jury on July 15 and will not be charged in connection with the incident.
The grand jury took the extraordinary step of writing directly to Texas Tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt, recommending that Bethel be reinstated to the football program.
The letter said, "We desire to see Mr. Bethel's scholarship re-instated. If he is re-instated, it is our belief that his consequences should not be greater than those of Ms. Battle."RELATED STORY:
