Family remembers Texas Tech student

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - As the Lubbock Police Department continues their investigation into the death of an 18-year-old Texas Tech student, family and friends are remembering Dalton Debrick.

"He was one in a million," said his Godmother Laura Surles, who spoke with our NBC Affiliate KXAS in Dallas. "He was a good kid."

Debrick was found dead at a home in 3600 block of 36th street but authorities are not revealing the circumstances surrounding his death or the cause at this time.

"It's all just speculation at this point. We're waiting to get the answers," Surles said. "His family and friends all loved him."

Police say they responded to a loud party call at the home around 12:05 a.m. Sunday.

They say residents were advised about the loud noise ordinance but no other actions were taken by police at that time.

Later that same morning, police returned to the home just before 9 a.m. in response to a report of a dead body.

Police say they believe Debrick died sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.

"He always made the right choices. He was such a giving person. This is such a shock," she said.

Debrick was a native of Irving, Texas. He graduated from Nimitz High School in 2014 and was a member of the baseball team.

"He loved baseball. All sports. From basketball goal in the backyard to football, everything you could imagine, he loved it," Surles said. "He wanted to teach sports and athletics to children and, you know, expand his knowledge and make it a better place for the kids to learn."

She says she will always remember his bear hugs when he would come to visit and what an influence he was in her son's life. She says his loss is hard to take.

"This kid was so amazing," she said. "He didn't deserve this."
