Family of New Mexico teen suing school district over fatal accident

LOVINGTON, NM (KCBD) - The family of a New Mexico teen killed in an accident at her high school is now suing the district.

Peggy Saenz, 17, died in August at University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was flown to UMC following an accident in the Lovington High School Parking lot. Lovington is about an hour and a half southwest of Lubbock.

Authorities say Saenz fell off of a moving vehicle and hit her head.

Now, her family is suing, claiming that the district knew about dangerous conditions in the parking lot, but did nothing about them. According to court papers obtained by the Associated Press, the district did not have security officers in the parking lot either.

Lovington Municipal Schools Superintendent Darin Manes and Lovington High School Principal Chris Brattain, both named in the lawsuit, did not immediately respond to an email from The Associated Press.

The family seeks more than $2.5 million in damages and legal fees.
