LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - 34-year-old Bernardo "Benny" Mendez was indicted Tuesday, charged with the murder of 51-year-old Herbert Fetherolf, whose body was found at the Villa Del Norte apartments on Thursday, March 26.

Mendez was arrested without incident at Tent City and transported to the Lubbock County Detention Center on Tuesday, March 31.

The warrant says Mendez caused Fetherolf's death by striking him in the head with a hard object.

Police say the arrest was based on information from the Lubbock County Medical Examiner, corroborated by witness statements.

One witness said Mendez bragged about "beating up an old man" and admitted to hitting him with a sink because he "looked at his girl."

The witness said Mendez then attempted to clean up the scene of the attack and hide the sink.

We'll continue to update this story as we learn more.
