LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Lubbock police officer was injured by a thrown liquor bottle overnight after responding to a civil disturbance at Bosses in the 1700 block of East 4th Street.

Police say a fight broke out after that first incident and "a couple hundred" people gathered to watch.

As officers waited for backup, an unknown suspect threw a liquor bottle at Officer Christopher Johnson and struck him on his head. The officer was transported by police vehicle to UMC where he was treated and later released.

Lubbock Mayor Glen Robertson spoke out about the incident on Facebook, "With a 'couple hundred' people watching, someone witnessed this cowardly attack on one of our officers. Please come forward and help Lubbock stand up to this type of criminal behavior. We need to send a strong message that Lubbock will not tolerate any attacks on our police officers."

The Lubbock Police Department urges anyone with information to call Crime Line at 741-1000.
