LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock Police say they have located the family of a sailor killed at Pearl Harbor.

Earlier this week, property room personnel discovered a Purple Heart and other World War Two medals awarded to the family of James D. Adkison.

Adkison died on board the U.S.S. Arizona.

Police recovered the medals while investigating a failed burglary back in the year 2000.

Detectives weren't able to solve the case, and the medals went unclaimed.

The medals were actually set to be thrown out, but police realized their significance.

"He's a war hero, he gave the ultimate sacrifice. We want to get that to the rightful owner, to his family. We don't believe he had any children, so we've got to find a distant family member some where that it would belong to," said Asst. Chief Greg Stevens.

Police were able to track down family in Arkansas, but they're still looking to see if anyone in the area knows the family as well.

You can contact Police at 775-2755.
