LPD officer seriously injured in collision; driver charged with intoxication assault

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Lubbock police have arrested a man accused of causing an accident that seriously injured a Lubbock police officer early Saturday morning.

Officer Corey Owens was directing traffic around flood waters at 4th Street and Elgin Avenue around 12:45 a.m. Police say Owens had his patrol vehicle parked in the westbound lanes with the emergency lights on.

Owens was standing outside of his patrol vehicle when police say another car traveling west on 4th hit it. The impact caused Owens' vehicle to hit him. Officer Owens was transported to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

Police say Jesse Tello, 19 of Lubbock was driving the car that hit Owens' patrol vehicle. He was also transported to UMC where he was treated and released. Officers then arrested Tello and took him to the Lubbock County Detention Center.

Tello is now facing a charge of intoxication assault.

Officer Owens is said to be in satisfactory condition as of Monday evening, June 1.
