LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Are there dangerous products where you least expect them, in your home? Many common household items contain chemicals with the potential to do harm.

Plastics, pans and processed foods – did you know that there are chemicals in these things that can cause harmful effects to you health? Research suggests that chronic exposure to chemicals in these everyday items might be associated with things like infertility and even cancer. So here are some tips on things you should know about these items.

There are many different types of plastic, and not all of them emit dangerous chemicals. However, many common food containers do, so check your products carefully. Also avoid heating up food in any plastic container as this transfers chemicals to your food.

Popular nonstick pans, with a synthetic coating on the inside have actually been linked to cancer when small amounts of the interior flakes off and into the food. It's best to use a cast iron or stainless steel pan with olive oil to keep the food from sticking.

Finally, if you've started using the popular small packs of dish and laundry detergent, keep them out of the reach of children. The brightly colored packets look like candy to toddlers and young children, and some children have been know to ingest them, which is incredibly dangerous.

Of course some of these materials pose greater health risks than others, but it's important that you understand about all of them so you can make informed decisions yourself.
