LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The state of Texas will now allow felons to collect food stamps.
Advocates say helping ex-inmates get back on their feet will help keep them from returning to jail.
So, starting Tuesday, anyone with a felony drug conviction can qualify for the stamps, unless they violate terms of their parole - that would lead to a two-year disqualification.
The TDCJ says of the 75,000 inmates released from prisons and jails last year, around 30 percent were convicted on drug charges.
