LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Governor Abbott awarded the Star of Texas Award to 28 Texans, including three Lubbock Police Officers on Thursday.

Those Lubbock officers are Timothy Varner, Michael Mastik Jr. and Corey Owens.

The award is presented to law enforcement officers killed or injured in the line of duty.

Varner was injured in October of 2013 when he was shot near the Salvation Army center.

Mastik was injured in a police chase in January of 2014.

Owens was hit by a suspected drunk driver while directing traffic in May of this year.

Governor Abbott says The Star of Texas award, "Goes only to those who are truly stars in the State of Texas, those who have shined in their service to our fellow Texans, those who self-sacrificed, and it has allowed Texas to continue to shine as the lone star of our great nation."
