The Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced the nomination of the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders for recognition as a national 2016 Blue Ribbon School.

Founded in 1982, Blue Ribbon Schools is a U.S. Department of Education program that recognizes public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students perform at very high levels.

The announcement was made by Lubbock ISD in a morning press event, following the Board of Trustees meeting. Berta Fogerson serves as principal of the school.

The Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders opened in 2008 as a part of the Young Women's Preparatory Network. The school has a foundation in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) curriculum with a focus on the pillars of leadership, college readiness, health and wellness.  More than 75 percent of the students are from economically disadvantaged homes and 85 percent will be first generation college students.

A unique public-private partnership, the school has a community advisory board with funding from both the

Dan Pope, president of the LISD Board of Trustees said, "In only eight years of existence, the Margaret Talkington School for Young Women Leaders has achieved the highest levels academic excellence. We are very proud of the work being done by the teachers and leadership team at Talkington. This school is a unique public/private partnership. We'd be remiss if we didn't recognize the significant support of the Community Advisory Board and both the Young Women's Preparatory Network and the J. T. and Margaret Talkington Charitable Foundation."

Superintendent Berhl Robertson, Jr., E.D., said, "The nomination of Talkington for a national Blue Ribbon school recognition is a credit to the work that's been done by Berta Fogerson and her team. Talkington is a unique concept in public education, but this well-deserved recognition illustrates the effectiveness of this school."

All schools nominated for the 2016 Blue Ribbon School honor were selected as exemplary, high performing schools, as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Each school has an economically disadvantaged population of 20 percent or greater. The nominated schools must now complete a rigorous application process through the U.S. Department of Education. Announcements of the national award winners will be made in September 2016. Schools that receive the award are recognized at the Blue Ribbon Schools awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
