Deaf and Hard of Hearing students at LISD learning life skills

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Though it's summer, many kids are in school.

The same holds true here in the Hub City.

But, for one summer program with Lubbock ISD, in particular, the kiddos are learning a special set of skills.

"The end goal for our summer enrichment program for our deaf ed kids are to promote literacy and writing, and give them a chance to communicate with their peers and work on language development," Amanda Sellers, a teacher with the program, explains.

These Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are doing this in a very special way.

"We are doing a lemonade stand next week, for them to be able to get out into the community and help bridge the communication barrier between the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the hearing community," Sellers says.

So, what do the kids think of it?

"I'm excited about talking with people and signing with them," Kursten Barbosa, a student in the program, says.

While others are excited for the hands-on experiences.

"After we followed the recipe and using that to make the lemonade, and we got to taste each one," Ladream Mallory, a student in the program, says. "Each one tasted different and it was fun, I really enjoyed that."

Sellers says this lesson will help these students learn how to interact with each other, follow directions, and even handle money.

They'll be selling their lemonade creations.

100% of the proceeds will benefit Life Run, a local organization that provides Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services.

But, the most important lesson to learn...

"I try to teach my kids that they can do anything they want to do, it doesn't matter," Sellers says. "The only thing they can't do is hear, but that shouldn't limit them in any way."
