SEMINOLE, TX (KCBD) - UPDATE: Thanks to help from the Seminole community, Mitchell Manning has a new cross to take with him on his walk from Florida to California.

He started walking on October 25, 2015, carrying a 12-foot cross as a way to represent his faith. His journey began in Jacksonville, Florida. To date, he has walked 1,500 miles. His name is Mitchell Manning and he is from Tennessee."He says, 'If anyone would be my disciple he must first deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me,'" Manning said.

Unfortunately, Manning's journey has been delayed due to someone taking his cross from a park in Seminole, TX. He temporarily left it in the ditch when he went to stay with a Seminole family Sunday.

"The cross is so big it's hard to carry even if you do have a truck," Manning said, "so I've always just left it on the side of the road in the grass."

When he returned to that spot to resume his journey, the cross and some of his belongings were gone.

"A bunch of people who have stopped have signed it," Manning said, "so it's covered in signatures, and so I would like to get it back if I could."

Manning will not continue his walk to California until he finds the cross, or he will rebuild one. He said friends he has made in Seminole have offered to help.

"The cross is the whole point," Manning said.

Some nights, Manning camps out, but other days strangers have offered their home to him or have paid for a hotel room. He has been walking between 10 to 15 miles per day, pushing nearly 150 pounds.

Manning posted a "Missing Cross" sign in the park, hoping that it will turn up. If not, he says several people have offered to help him build him a new one.

If you have seen the cross, you can contact Mitchell Manning on his Facebook page Cross Walk America or at 615-489-5162.
