CANADIAN, TX (KCBD) - Dana Koch's son and daughter-in-law announced they were pregnant just last week.
"He had a look on his face of just total happiness, like he was just thrilled about that baby," Koch said.
But instead of celebrating the happy news, Koch is making funeral arrangements.
"Now a week later he is gone," Koch said.
Koch said her son, 25-year-old Cade Koch, left work in Canadian around 5:30 p.m. Monday and started making the roughly 25-mile journey home to Lipscomb.
"I said please don't go; it's too dangerous, they are closing roads," Koch said.
The fire near Lipscomb has now burned more than 300,000 acres.
But she said Cade was determined to get home to his wife.
"She had no car, pregnant, scared. He said it's my responsibility to go take care of my family," Koch said.
She said Cade promised to call her when he got home, but as time passed, she began to worry.
Koch said her husband started looking for Cade while she stayed home next to the phone.
"I get a phone call and it says 'Cade's cell' and I say, 'Thank God, thank God he's okay,'" Koch said.
But when Koch answered the phone, it wasn't Cade's voice; it was a sheriff's deputy.
Koch said they found Cade's body five miles from his home.
Now Sierra is forced to raise their child without Cade.
She created a GoFundMe account in hopes of raising money to pay for Cade's funeral.
She said whatever is left will go toward their child.
Family friends said if you would like to help, you can make a donation at any Happy State Bank location under Dana Koch's name.
