LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Heavy plumes of black smoke rose from the new practice facility at Jones AT&T stadium on Wednesday afternoon. According to Texas Tech University officials, a small fire started at the northeast corner of the TTU Athletics Sports Performance Center construction site at approximately 5:20 p.m.
The fire was contained by 6 p.m.
Texas Tech's Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning & Construction Michael Molina said this fire started when a piece of molten metal from welding fell from the top roof down onto a pile of roofing material on the lower roof.
Safety watchmen immediately reacted by lowering their lift, but within one minute the pallet of material ignited.
Molina said the fire was actually small, but produced a large quantity of black smoke because of the nature of the rubber roofing material. The fire was contained to one bundle of material.
"We are pleased all safety protocols were followed and thankful there were no injuries as a result of the incident," said Texas Tech University System Vice Chancellor for Facilities Planning and Construction Michael Molina. "We would also like to thank Lubbock Fire and Rescue for their timely and professional response."
The roofing material was not laid down. Crews will be checking the steel deck to make sure the structure of the building was not damaged.
The facility site is open for work. No delays are expected for a Sept. 1 project completion date.?
