HALE COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - Former Abernathy Police Chief Cameron Bowman was indicted on Monday, charged with theft by a public servant.

In August 2017, the City of Abernathy suspended Chief Bowman without pay based on malfeasance following allegations of unauthorized purchases on a city credit card.

As the Abernathy City Council reviewed the case, officials said the Hale County District Attorney's Office and the Texas Rangers were asked to investigate the allegations.

The following week, the Abernathy City Council voted to unanimously terminate Bowman.

After a public records request, KCBD learned Bowman was terminated on charges of numerous unauthorized purchases amounting to more than $750.

Bowman was chief for five years.

The city attorney said he did not receive any kind of severance package.
