Mayor's Marathon: What you need to know

Mayor's Marathon: What you need to know

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - This Sunday is the first Mayor's Marathon in Lubbock. The marathon officially begins at 7:30 a.m., but LPD will be blocking off Loop 289 around 5:45 a.m.

All counterclockwise lanes will be closed to traffic. Those who would regularly be traveling that way will be directed to the service roads.

There are also two important detours to note: the north Loop detour at Clovis Highway to I-27 and the east Loop detour, from east 19th Street to Southeast Drive.

As the race progresses, portions of the loop will be re-opened once the participants, care stations, and volunteers have gotten their equipment loaded and everything cleared out.

LFR Fire Chief Lance Phelps spoke with KCBD about the details of the event in which he thanked the community for their patience and asked the public to say something if they see something out of the usual.

"We also ask everyone to be vigilant. If they see something out of the ordinary if something doesn't seem right, to report it," Phelps said. "They can report it to LPD and LPD will investigate it. We want to make sure this is a safe and secure event for the city and all the participants. With all of these types of events, we have to have the public's help and the information that the public gives us, to help us keep the event secure."

The City of Lubbock will also update its Public Information Viewer app with traffic updates as the day goes on. That can be seen here:
