LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - A Vietnam veteran and recipient of the Medal of Honor was in Lubbock Saturday night ahead of speaking at a Memorial Day service on Sunday.

Vietnam medic and Medal of Honor recipient Gary Beikirch will be the keynote speaker at a Sunday night event at Second Baptist Church, 6109 Chicago Avenue, where a wall remembering our fallen heroes will be on display.

The Remembering Our Fallen wall shows the names of 615 Texans who've fallen since the War on Terror began. The church will be open after its last service on May 27 for the community to come and visit the display.

"Remembering Our Fallen is a photographic war memorial that honors our country's military Fallen from The War on Terror (9/11/2001 - Present). Unlike brick and mortar memorials, Remembering Our Fallen is designed to travel and includes both military and personal photos.  Its legacy will be that these men and women will be remembered and their names will be spoken, while helping to lessen the grief of their families."

Gold Star families are encouraged to attend. They will be recognized and receive a rose.

Beikirch will speak Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. followed by Gold Star Mother, Brenda Robertson.

On Sunday afternoon he told us that Memorial Day is not just a day of celebration and he hopes folks remember why we recognize this day.
