LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - The Lubbock branch of the Young Women's Christian Association has completed the purchase of the former Kmart building, located at 6501 University Ave., as part of an expansion project.
The purchase is part of an effort to consolidate the organization's operations and expand services towards its childcare and youth, health and fitness, and community outreach services, according to YWCA news release. The goal is to turn the area into a hub for youth and their families, Glenda Mathis, CEO of YWCA Lubbock said in the release.
Now the organization will take the abandoned space and renovate it to meet the needs of the organization, children and families around that area of Lubbock.
"This move is so exciting for the Board, membership and community of Lubbock," Mitzi Ziegner, Lubbock board chairwoman, said in the release. "We are grateful to our many community partners working with us to make big dreams like this one possible. Just as with the J.T. and Margaret Talkington YWCA at Sun 'n Fun, this project will change the landscape of our community and make a positive difference for generations to come!"
