LUBBOCK COUNTY, TX (KCBD) - Honey Haney Smith, Senior Forensic Nurse/Managing Director at the Lubbock County Medical Examiner's Office, is no longer employed with Lubbock County.

According to Greg George, the Lubbock County Director of Human Resources, Smith's position was eliminated last week at his recommendation. He also recommended the forensic and administrative departments be separate.

George says they made the decision to change the workflow now because Dr. Sridhar Natarajan is retiring on Oct. 1 and it will be a good time to eliminate the position and make any changes as the Interim Medical Examiner comes in.

Officials say Smith will be paid until the end of September, but she is no longer working at the Medical Examiner's Office.

A Lubbock County Commissioner's meeting will be held Thursday to discuss, consider and take action to appoint Dr. Sam Andrews as the Interim Acting Chief Medical Examiner.

Commissioner Bill McCay says Andrews applied to the position through an online posting. McCay also says that they have done an extensive background check.

Dr. Sridhar Natarajan has stopped taking new cases, in preparation for his official retirement on Oct. 1.

Natarajan told  Lubbock County Commissioners he wants to wrap up any cases that he was already working on and expects them to be finished by his retirement date.

The court has contracted other doctors to carry on any new cases that come up.
