LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - 15-year-old Gracie LaQuey started a shoe drive three years ago after seeing some children at a summer sports camp not have the right shoes, and some children didn't have shoes at all.
The first year of Gracie's shoe drive, she gave out 300 shoes. Last year she gave out just under 800 shoes. This year she almost doubled the number of shoes she gave away with 1,241 shoes. 300 pairs of the shoes were bought brand new at the store.
After collecting the shoes, the LaQuey family sorted, labeled and took the shoes to Lubbock Impact.
This evening, there was a Back to School Night, where families could enjoy a dinner, followed by children getting a pair of shoes from Gracie's collection, socks, clothes, school supplies and a backpack.
Gracie was just recognized by the Volunteer Center of Lubbock. She was nominated and won the award for the Junior Lubbock Volunteer Award for 2018. She will receive the award in November.
