POST, TX (KCBD) - The 5th annual MK BBQ Cook-Off kicks off Friday, Sept. 7, benefiting the Post Animal Refuge Center.

Judging will take place on Saturday.

The competition will take place at Moose Knuckles Bar and Grill located at 208 North Avenue F. in Post.

The payout for first place is $400 and a $250 payout goes to the grand reserve.

1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each category will win cash payouts.

There are several categories: brisket, ribs, half chicken, battle of the beans, blood mary mix off, sugar daddy deserts, ace of appetizers and hot sauce.The entree fee for the meat categories is $100.

The band ,Your Brothers Uncle, will perform from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

RV and tent camping is available.

There will be a double raffle for two tickets to the Cowboys vs. Eagles game, which includes a one night hotel stay.

The second place prize is a gas grill.

Tickets are $10 each or three for $25.

Proceeds will be donated to the Post Animal Refuge Center.

The Post Animal Refuge Center was founded in 2010. Staff tells us they have had more than 650 animals through the shelter and have placed more than 575 into permanent homes.

Cathy Cook with the center said the city's shelter was euthanizing 120 dogs a year. After PARC was founded, Cook said that number has decreased by more than 50. The center houses 18-20 dogs at a time.
