Propane Explosion Forces South Lubbock Evacuation

Residents are now being allowed back into their homes and streets are reopening after a massive explosion forced evacuations. The Lubbock Fire Department allowed the returns and reopenings at 11:30 p.m. Monday night.

It started when a propane tank exploded just before 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon at Wylie LP Gas, Inc at 8205 Ave F., near 82nd and I-27. The explosion caused a massive fire. Initial reports state that around 70 firefighters responded to the blaze from Idalou, Abernathy, New Deal, Shallowater, Woodrow and Lubbock fire departments.

Traffic in and around the area was diverted including north and southbound lanes of I-27 and MLK Blvd. Business and neighborhoods with in a mile and a half area of the fire were evacuated.

As of 7:45 p.m., damage was reported to at least a dozen vehicles, warehouses, and business in the area. The fire is still burning, but officials feel there is no immanent danger. Those in the area are asked to keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke inhalation.

Evacuees Scared For Their Homes After Propane Tank Fire
All residents who were evacuated earlier today are still urged to stay away from their homes until it is safe to return. NewsChannel 11's Jennifer Vogel learned the Salvation Army is where evacuees can stay if they can't get in their homes overnight.

Crews will remain on the scene monitoring the situation throughout the morning hours. A command post has been set up at 82nd and Avenue P. Business owners are asked to check in at the command post before returning to their businesses.
