Tornados Seen in Lubbock Skies



While flooding became the story Sunday evening, earlier tornadoes were the talk of the town, catching many residents off guard.
Many had plans to spend the day outside, possibly even play a game of catch. But just after 12:30pm Sunday afternoon Lubbockites witnessed the first signs of a surprise storm that would affect the rest of their day.
Heavy flooding hit Lubbock intersections causing a number of weather related accidents including a one car rollover 2 miles west of Ralls on Hwy-114. Officials say that accident happened around 7:00pm Sunday evening and was weather related. A 46-year-old female passenger was transported to Covenant with moderate injuries. The male driver was transported to Crosbyton Medical Center with minor injuries.
Chief Meteorologist, John Robison had been tracking the storms, "Around Lubbock the National Weather Service started to get reports of low energy funnels. I called the Weather Service around 12:30pm and one of those (tornados) sighted apparently touched down. They issued the tornado warning at 12:36pm."
Seconds later, reports of funnel clouds were coming in from all over Lubbock, including a twister shot from the Tech campus by NewChannel 11 at 12:44pm Sunday Afternoon.
One Lubbockite witnessed the funnel clouds, "My family and I were driving home from lunch after church probably about 1:30pm, coming around the loop and all the sudden we saw one of those funnel spouts, it didn't come all the way down, but it kept getting a little lower and lower."
Witnesses reported seeing funnel clouds a tornado was confirmed by the National Weather Serivce neear 98th Street and Highway 87. Other witnesses reported funnel clouds again at near the Texas Tech Golf Course.
Only minor damage has been reported, including debris scattered on roadways and a metal shed that was blown into a guardrail near 98th Street and Indiana. Reports of hail came in as heavy rain drilled the ground, causing heaving flooding on roadways.
