LUBBOCK,TX (KCBD) -
Residents in Snyder are wondering why a total of eight earthquakes have been rocking their town.
The United States Geological Survey say it's normal for the region to have aftershocks from a larger earthquake.
That happened Sunday morning just after 7:30 in the morning. It was a 4.4 magnitude earthquake 11 miles north northeast of Snyder.
There have been no reports of damage, but more than 800 people from Austin to Dallas to Lubbock reported feeling the quake. Most say they just had overturned picture frames and broken glass.
The latest aftershock was felt this morning around 9 a.m. and was registered at 3.4.
Right now there are a lot of residents speculating what's rumbling beneath the surface. Some say it could be from oil.
"The most speculation is we pump so much oil out here that the dirt has got to go somewhere," said Fire Chief and Emergency Management Coordinator, Perry Westmoreland.
The USGS says that's not the case.
"It's hard to tell if oil and gas activity could be the cause. We know it can, but we also know they can occur naturally. We are not going to be looking at it, but Texas may take a look at it," said USGS geophysicist, Don Blakeman.
Until the town finds answers, some say they will just have fun talking about it.
"We just stand on Psalms 91. He's a God that can shake things and a God that can take care of us," said Snyder resident, Rita House.
The largest earthquake Snyder has seen is a 5.8 magnitude.
