Lubbock businesses deal with Blue Bell recall

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - With all of Blue Bell's products recalled, some Lubbock businesses that use the ice cream in their products have either changed their menus or stopped selling ice cream at all.
Blue Sky heavily relies on Blue Bell ice cream for their entire dessert menu, so the recall means a loss in profit.
Blue Sky Over Texas' entire dessert menu consists of Blue Bell ice cream products, something that General Manager Brock Chilcutt, never expected to stop selling.
But, after receiving word of the voluntary recall from Blue Bell, their first priority was the safety of their customers.
"That's why we decided to pull it and not sell any ice cream," Chilcutt said.
He said the recall was definitely a surprise to them, but they pulled all products they typically use for floats and shakes immediately.
Now they're looking for substitutions.
"We really don't have any right now, we're looking into subbing out something, like maybe some ice cream sandwiches or something for the meantime, until we do find a suitable replacement for it," Chilcutt said.
"It's definitely going to affect our sales. That is kind of an up sale thing, with desserts and everything for especially the kids," Chilcutt said. "We have our kid meals on Tuesday nights and that's usually a big thing, being able to get a shake also, so it will affect our sales quite a bit over the next week or two."
But, Blue Sky is not the only business affected. Bahama Bucks also had to make some changes.
The shaved ice company's CFO, Eric Lee, said after receiving information on the voluntary recall, Bahama Bucks disposed of all the ice cream across all locations.
"Fortunately for us, the Blue Bell products we use, they haven't ever been linked to any contamination, but we're concerned about public safety," Lee said. "We're trying to make sure that all stores disposed of the product and we are adding ice cream from different manufacturers."
Both companies said they want customers to know that their safety is their first priority.
