Understanding Dyslexia
LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - We think of Dyslexia as a language disorder in which letters are backwards or in the wrong place.
But Dyslexia is more complicated than that.
And sometimes it can seem complicated for the parents to find the special attention that child deserves.
Debbi Casteel, the Administrative Assistant at Scottish Rite, says it's estimated that 10 to 15% of the students on any school campus have some sort of learning disability.
In an effort to help parents understand their legal rights when it comes to education, Scottish Rite is hosting the C. J. Davidson Memorial Lecture Series: Advances in Literacy. Specifically, it will address "Special Education, Section 504 and the Texas Dyslexia Law".
Dave Richards, an attorney who specializes in education law, is leading that discussion.
Sue Rodgers, Director of Scottish Rite, says "He will be explaining what's available. The rights of parents. The rights of students. How to get evaluated. What programs to look for. He's going to begin the day by talking about 504 which is something we are all familiar with because dyslexia kiddos fall in that. But he's also going to talk about a Federal program called IDEA, compare the two. And he's going to end by talking about the Texas Dyslexia Law."
The seminar is this Friday, Feb. 12, at Scottish Rite learning center at 1101 70th by the South Loop.
The fee is $50.
If you have not registered, there will be registration forms at the door when it begins at 8:30 a.m.. The event continues until 4 p.m.
