LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) - Former District 19 Congressional candidate and retired Colonel Michael Bob Starr has released a statement following KCBD's debate on Wednesday between Glen Robertson and Jodey Arrington.

Candidates Glen Robertson and Jodey Arrington answered several questions during the debate, but, one concerning Dyess Air Force Base led to some back and forth about former candidate Michael Bob Starr.

Starr faced criticism about his involvement in races sponsored by the Pride Alliance at the base that he previously commanded.

Glen Robertson told KCBD after the debate: "I don't know who gave that information to this local radio host, but I do know he's an Arrington supporter.  So, I felt like it was a little disingenuous for the attack."

"There's no truth to that.  He knows that.  There was only one candidate that put that information out there and repeatedly ran those attack ads throughout 29 counties," said Jodey Arrington during the debate.

Arrington denied the claims.

Starr released a statement Friday morning:

It's important that our next Congressman is truly committed to Dyess Air Force Base and our men and women in uniform. Round one of this election drifted into the politics of character assassination and away from the issues. People in West Texas deserve better and I hope both candidates will put forth a positive vision for West Texas while letting their respective supporters know that they do not condone and will not tolerate mudslinging. That's the only way we make our region and our communities stronger. That's why I ran and what I continue to believe.

Voters will choose leaders for their cities and schools on Saturday, May 7. Lubbock County will be using voting centers. That means you do not have to vote at a specific precinct. To find the nearest one to you, just text your zip code to 75044. Polls open at 7 a.m. on Saturday.
