Crews respond to structure fire in downtown Lubbock Wednesday morning
LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Lubbock Fire Rescue received multiple calls Wednesday morning of heavy smoke and flames coming from a commercial building in downtown.
Around 7:20 a.m., firefighters responded to an abandoned tire shop near 18th Street and Ave. B.
Firefighters arrived to find the structure fully involved.
Due to a significant amount of debris, trash and old tires inside the building crews had difficulty battling the fire from inside.
LFR says the fire started venting through the roof causing it to collapse.
The fire was brought under control with no injuries reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Due to a previous fire at this building and ongoing safety concerns, LFR is working with the city to possibly demolish the abandoned structure.
“Lubbock Fire Rescue had previously responded to a fire at this same location on Christmas Day in 2024. Due to ongoing safety concerns posed by the building, the Fire Marshal’s Office is working in coordination with the City of Lubbock Code Enforcement to explore the possibility of an emergency demolition to protect both the public and first responders.”
