Driver charged with DWI after pedestrian killed in overnight crash in central Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) - Police say a man is facing charges in connection with a crash that killed a pedestrian in central Lubbock.

39-year-old Brian Rodriguez was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated.

Just before midnight, police responded to a crash involving a pedestrian near 66th and University Ave.

Investigators say it appears 40-year-old Crystal Vela was struck by an SUV while crossing University Avenue. Police identified Rodriguez as the driver of the SUV.

Vela was taken to UMC with serious injuries where she later died.

Rodriguez was arrested and booked into the Lubbock County Detention Center.

Police say there is not enough evidence yet to charge Rodriguez in connection with Vela’s death, but new charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
